《實用漢語課本》第一，二冊共五十課，是供外國學生學習現代漢語用的基礎階段教材，也可以供外國人自學漢語使用。
這套教材的主要目的是培養學生在實際生活中運用漢語進行交際的能力，併為進一步學習漢語打下比較牢固的基礎。本教材力求從漢語本身的特點出發，吸取不同的外語教學法的長處，通過句型替換、功能項目操練、語法分析等綜合性的訓練，來達到這一目標。
《實用漢語課本》的編寫原則是：
1．本書所依據的是中國人所通用的、規範的、地道的現代漢語，首先介紹日常生活中最必需的、也是初學者在社會交際中急需掌握的活的語言材料。
2．本書不但要使讀者掌握一定數量的常用語言形式，而且要具備在一定的情境中運用這些語言形式的能力。全書通過兩個外國學生帕蘭卡和古波在他們自己國家以及後來到中國學習漢語、跟中國朋友交往的情節，提供了一定的語言情境。第一冊人物活動的場景不在中國——我們希望讀者在他們自己國家的生活環境裏也能進行漢語實踐。
3．成年人學習外語，掌握必要的語音、語法規律並用來指導自己的語言實踐，可以收到更好的效果。本書在強調語言實踐的基礎上，對基本的語音、語法知識也作了介紹。
4．要學好漢語，必須對中國的文化、歷史和現實有所了解。本書(特別是從第二冊開始)盡可能將語言和文化結合起來，通過有關中國社會、歷史、名勝古跡、風土人情等題材學習漢語。
5．每課的詞彙、句型、擴展、語法、課文、閱讀短文、練習等環節盡可能互相配合，加強詞彙和句型的重現率。
由於學生的具體情況不同，教師在使用本教材時可根據教學對象的特點靈活掌握。教師可以全部或部分地使用書中所提供的材料，也可以自行確定教學環節的先後次序。
《實用漢語課本》的體例：
課文
大部分採用對話體，以利於基礎階段在聽、說、讀、寫全面要求的基礎上突出聽和說的訓練。
生詞
除了必須掌握的生詞外，每課的補充詞供學生量力吸收。
註釋
解釋課文中的難句和某些詞語的用法；補充說明已學的語法點；介紹必要的背景知識。有些難句中出現的新語法點，是以後將要重點學習的，本課只要求弄懂意思。
語音練習(第十二課)和語音語調
前十二課在學習會話和句型的同時，比較集中地進行語音和聲調——重點是難音、難調——的訓練，以打下較好的語音基礎。第十二課以後，除繼續鞏固語音和聲調外，還增加語調的練習。
會話練習(前十二課)和替換與擴展
在進行機械替換、能熟練地掌握基本句型的基礎上，通過一定的情境擴展，進一步靈活運用所學句型。
語音(前十二課)和語法
介紹本課出現的主要語音點或語法點，不求全面係，而是針對外國讀者的難點和漢語本身的特點作必要的說明。每單元復習課中的語法小結，幫助讀者歸納已學過的主要語法點。
閱讀短文
重現已學過的詞彙和句型，加強閱讀練習並逐步培養口頭、筆頭成段表達的能力。
練習
通過各種練習形式，鞏固主要語法點(包括每課註釋部分介紹的一些詞語用法)。希望讀者充分利用本書的插圖進行有情境的會話練習。
漢字
本書每課附有漢字筆順表。在漢字練習本中對漢字的偏旁部首及字源、結構進行分析，並通過描寫、臨寫等行之有效的辦法幫助讀者學習漢字。
《實用漢語課本》第一、二冊在編寫過程中得到北京語言學院漢語教師們很多幫助。我們期待使用本教材的國內外教師和讀者提出寶貴意見，以便進一步修改這兩冊書並繼續編寫下一階段教材。
